Statement
Whether it is photography, painting or sculpture,
Chris Taylor's artwork is an illustration of modern
religious and spiritual themes. As a child he was
fascinated by the ornate decor of the Catholic Church.
Later in life, he noticed a stark contrast to the
visually sterile Protestant Church. This
examination continued in college where Taylor attained
degrees in both Sculpture and Religious Studies and
produced artwork that centered on the visual reflection
of religious beliefs. His focus was on how belief
structures were made physical by paintings, symbols,
sacred space and architecture.
Viewers are drawn into installations that feel like
religious settings. Chris' rooms immediately
transport the audience somewhere sacred and allow for
contemplation of their own spirituality. People
have actually reserved time in the rooms for meditation.
Idols, altarpieces and other
sculptures often recall a religious ritual or meaning.
Oftentimes, the artist makes objects that appear to be
artifacts of a mysterious religion from eons past.
In either case, the viewer is left placing their own
meaning and creating some use for the objects.
Recently, Chris has been documenting
"Ghost Signs"; the hand painted billboards that
represent soaps, tobacco companies, old businesses and
products. These images are America's early
Super-graphics and reminiscent of past generations.
This project calls attention to the built environment
and envelops the viewer in nostalgia.
